Today’s students have many needs ranging from the bottom to the top of Maslow’s hierarchy. Teachers are tasked with ensuring that students feel physically and emotionally safe, seen and heard, and then focused enough to engage with material that has been written, modified and differentiated. This workshop will focus on classroom structures, including how materials are organized, how class begins and ends, rules of engagement within class, and expectations for how all people are treated. We will also delve into actual teaching practices that celebrate all learners and encourage every student to use their voice during discussions and activities. We will discuss and share ideas around assessment so students have choices while demonstrating content knowledge with expected rigor. This will be a facilitative model that will involve table and group discussion; attendees will acknowledge the solid work they are already doing in their classrooms and add to their repertoire with ease.
