Name
Beyond CRAAP and SIFT: Leveraging Student Curiosity to Build the Foundation for Lifelong Information Evaluation Skills
Date & Time
Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 1:30 PM - 2:25 PM
Description
Our information landscape is growing increasingly complex and dynamic. Given this reality it is necessary for our students to think critically about the content of the information they consume; the structures that facilitate its communication; & their own individual perspectives and responsibilities. Checklists such as the CRAAP test and dispositions like SIFT offer baseline responses to information evaluation assignments. However, they do not push students to use their existing knowledge and mental models to be curious about our information systems and interrogate various sources to assess their value. These skills are lifelong, constantly growing and must be able to evolve as our students grow and the world evolves. Participants will learn about class activities that help students develop their own information evaluation toolkits; engage in conversations about information literacy (IL) and walk away with resources intended to support the AASL and ACRL frameworks for IL instruction.
