Description
The purpose of the AI session is to review the Doctrine of Discovery (DOD) of 1493 and it’s current and historical impacts on Native/Indigenous sovereignty, introduce the Standard Model of Indigenous Learning (SMIL) developed by Dr. Sandra Barton, engage in AI prompt engineering, and the need for academic integrity when teaching Native histories. The objective is to apply the SMIL to discern where and how to make shifts in teaching and learning in order to center Native Peoples and their histories, enhance critical thinking skills of all students, and develop cultural literacy as it applies to Indigenous pedagogies. After participants learn of the DOD and the SMIL, they will engage in developing prompt engineered AI generated lesson plans using Magic Bus (or similar platform). Participants working in large then small groups will consider the generated lessons, reviewing them for cultural literacy, historical accuracy, standards alignment, and academic integrity.
