Name
Using Your Own AI Chatbot for Math Learning
Date & Time
Wednesday, October 16, 2024, 2:45 PM - 3:40 PM
Description
This highly interactive session will begin with a critical overview of AI chatbots as curriculum and instructional resources for teachers. Recent research has documented the growing use of AI chatbots by teachers; in one 2024 survey, nearly half of 1000 educators said they were using ChatGPT weekly while 60 percent reported they viewed chatbots favorably. But they all wanted more training and more strategies for using AI in schools. We will describe the differences between general-purpose GenAI tools (including ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot) and teacher-customized bots that have been aligned to address specific academic needs. We will demonstrate the use of customized bots to support young students as they read and solve math word problems and engage in related math learning activities. Participants will leave with knowledge of how they can utilize and fine tune chatbots to directly support student math learning in elementary and middle schools.
