Date & Time

Description
All lessons that students are taught should be affirming, engaging, and meaningful. In this session, participants will be engaged in a lesson as students that will do just that. As computer science is the future, but it is not representative of the future we want, it is essential that we focus on how to utilize student funds of knowledge in the early years and continue throughout! A lack of representation in computer science has historically shown a negative impact on the algorithms and products that we all use. We need to show students that they belong in computer science and that their unique identities are essential to the field. In this session, participants will learn about the importance of representation and student identity in computer science and how one district has been tackling this task. Overall, participants will come away with an activity and discussion questions to share with their staff during a professional development, or in the classroom with their students.
