Name
Thinking Machines? Or Lying, Cheating, and Stealing Machines? Ethical Considerations for the Use of AI in Education
Date & Time
Thursday, October 17, 2024, 2:45 PM - 3:40 PM
Torrey Trust
Description
This interactive session will dive into the behind the scenes of GenAI tools - what are they really? As participants learn more about the ethical considerations surrounding GenAI tools, they’ll be prompted to reflect upon questions that support deeper and more critical thinking, such as “Will you allow students to cite text written by cheating machines?” and “When might using a biased machine harm student learning?” and “What should you tell students about using lying machines?” Then, at the end, participants will be asked to consider whether AI should really be called “artificial intelligence” given that these tools aren’t really “intelligent” and if there is a more fitting name (e.g., “SALAMI - systematic approaches to learning algorithms and machine inferences”). By the end of the session, participants will be able to 1) bring conversations about GenAI and ethics into their practice and 2) make an informed decision about when/if/how to use GenAI tools for teaching and learning.
