Once Upon a Wi-Fi: Teaching Digital Citizenship Through Children’s Books
Description

This demonstration-based workshop highlights a middle school digital literacy project in which students create original digital picture books centered on digital citizenship themes including online safety, cyberbullying, misinformation, digital footprints, and responsible posting. Using Canva and Book Creator, participants will observe how students brainstorm story ideas, design characters, create illustrations, and publish engaging read-aloud style books for younger audiences. The session explores practical classroom strategies for storytelling, collaboration, visual design, and responsible AI use while demonstrating how creative projects can strengthen media literacy, communication, SEL connections, and digital citizenship skills. Educators will also explore adaptable project structures, lesson ideas, and implementation strategies that can be immediately customized for a variety of classroom settings. Student examples and guided discussion opportunities are included throughout daily.
