Developing Informed Citizens: A K-12 Approach to Civics and Media Literacy
Description
Our students need to develop strong news and media literacy skills in order to be informed, engaged and responsible citizens. We will present a model for K-12 vertical alignment, demonstrating how elementary, middle, and high school librarians/educators can collaboratively build a continuous and cohesive curriculum pipeline. We will provide age-appropriate resources and strategies for each level for teaching news literacy, media literacy, and civic engagement. Our work is informed by our collaboration with Project Zero and the Democratic Knowledge Project for Mass. DESE. Participants will have the opportunity to break out by grade level/stage to brainstorm and share specific implementation ideas. Participants will come out better prepared to take an active role in preparing civic-minded students who can research and evaluate information effectively and be responsible digital citizens.
