Prioritizing Information Literacy in Elementary Learning Spaces
Description
Information literacy is the set of skills used to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information” -American Library Association. These skills are essential for civics readiness, social-emotional development, and successful learning.
Students need to be responsible and effective users of information. As students access print and digital text and media, they should apply critical thinking and inquiry skills to analyze and evaluate the sources, reflect on and make meaning from the information, and then apply their learning to engage in discourse, or share their learning in some way.
Elementary educators can design engaging opportunities for students to develop information literacy skills, such as pairing deeper thinking and questioning routines with digital media, exploring primary and secondary sources to learn about current events, and facilitating student research tasks.
