Wired for Bias: Why Our Brains and Our Bots Get It Wrong
Description
Most students (and adults) consume information online, accessing news and research through websites, social media posts, and chatbot conversations. While many people are focused on digging into finding credible sources, most forget to search for bias. This session will lead participants through four explorations that will address digital bias. These hands-on activities will uncover bias in the news, algorithmic bias in AI, echo chambers on social media, and how confirmation bias impacts our brain. Once the “how” and “why” of each is explained, the attendees will be shown various activities that can help students combat bias online. The session will end with a guided discussion about where teaching about bias “fits” into different subject areas and at different age levels.
