Computer Science for Good: Empowering Students to use Computer Science with Purpose
Description
Computer science education is about more than coding and algorithms—it’s about cultivating purpose, creativity, and problem-solving. Computer Science for Good is a powerful approach that helps students use computer science as a tool to create positive change in their communities/ the world. This session will guide educators through the philosophy, strategies, and classroom practices as well as demonstrate how it fosters both technical skills and a sense of hope, joy, and agency in learners. Participants will be introduced to classroom-ready activities ranging from problem-solving challenges to coding projects. Educators will see examples of projects like designing apps to support community needs and using physical computing to build out projects. These examples will highlight how CS4Good can be adapted to fit diverse grade levels, contexts, and student abilities. Participants will engage in exploration of sample activities/classroom applications and draft a plan to implement CS4Good.
