From Consumers to Creators: Collaborative Storytelling as a Model for Future-Ready Learning
Description
In a world where students consume media yet rarely collaborate meaningfully through it, how can educators leverage technology to foster creativity, empathy, and student voice? This interactive session introduces the Filmbuilding framework, a collaborative visual storytelling approach that transforms phones into tools for connected, student-centered learning. Through a co-creative filmmaking challenge, participants work in pairs to discover shared human experiences, translate them into a 5-shot video story, and engage in “cinema charades” as peers interpret the intended meaning. Grounded in project-based learning, SEL, and connected learning research, this session demonstrates how accessible visual storytelling can deepen engagement across numerous subjects and interdisciplinary contexts. Attendees will leave with immediately transferable, low-barrier strategies for building authentic and highly engaging learning experiences in any classroom.
