Re-Thinking Literacy: Print, Digital and AI Successfully Converge
Description

Teaching students to communicate effectively in an ever evolving present and highly unpredictable future is a daunting task. The literacy that bears the load of this burden is print: the command of which is achieved by approximately 30% of our students, a consistent NAEP statistic since 1992. Then, there’s digital literacy which is rarely practiced but is a primary means of communication for the vast majority of students. And there is AI, an inexorable and irresistible literacy tool that can either destroy or enhance literacy learning, while simultaneously challenging the teacher and the school on multiple ethical and behavioral levels. In this workshop I will present a model of literacy teaching that re-balances print and digital writing practices with a clear integration of AI for the purposes of increasing engagement, making literacy more inclusive, and building key Human Skills such as collaboration, creativity, iterative thinking, decision making and problem solving.
